THE LIFE OF A GREENKEEPER

The life of a greenkeeper is in most cases a complete mystery to those who frequent such grounds, but take it from a well-experienced industry worker, it’s no picnic.

The day of a greenkeeper starts during the hours when most of us are still deeply embedded in dreamland. The sun will only meet a greenkeeper at work during the peak of summer, otherwise the day starts in darkness and usually the cool air will accompany it.

The daily duties are comprised of ‘short cuts’ (cutting the greens at somewhere close to 3mms) ‘pin placements’ (moving of the hole and flag on the greens to reduce wear on areas of the green) and the maintenance of the rough areas (the right air-conditioned machine, equipped with radio and a cushioned seat can result in an enjoyable day at work).

However, Mother Nature often has other plans. With only a little too much rain and some boisterous wind, the ‘day-to-day’ of a golf course can turn into a catastrophe. Too much rainfall can inspire disease to spread in the greens and too little can see the area wither and weaken.

I was once asked what it was like to work on a golf course and after thinking about it for a moment I replied; “the early mornings are tough, but the sunrises are priceless”.

I have experienced some of the most arduous and trying times whilst at my job but these have been balanced with some truly majestic landscapes.

Every profession comes with its difficulties, but few working environments can beat the view from the top of a fairway. When there is just enough rain and the temperature is crisp but comfortable, then a golf course can make for an amazing workstation.

Though cutting the grass and cleaning the grounds are daily chores, which necessitate many hours of a maintenance team, it is the lessor known skills of the trade that are needed to meet the more complex challenges of the industry.

From floods to storms, uprooting of trees to the finest millimetre cut of a smooth rolling green, the life of a greenkeeper is as varied as it gets. It is a trade that explores unique ways of manipulating vast landscapes through unpredictable weather patterns and can create green oases in even the most arid deserts.
