THE HUMEWOOD COURSE REPORT

Thanks to the recent rains the course has been transformed into an artist’s dream landscape. The greens and surrounds flow beautifully into each other, rolling hills adding to the effect. We can’t but stand in silence and admire the natural beauty that lies before us.

Spraying of Chemicals

The rain has softened the fairways and greens and, if the weather plays its part, should ensure a great round of golf. Unfortunately, it is that time of the year where the course staff have to battle with POA.  Spraying chemicals is a must to stop the germination of the seed head and retard the growth. We will have notifications boards on the way to the tee-box when staff  do decide to spray.

It is, under normal circumstances, never a good idea to use your saliva to clean your golf balls. But it is even more important NOT to do so, when chemicals have been sprayed.

Bunker Repairs

We are ready to start the repairs to the 12th hole bunkers. Stephen and his crew will begin operations on Sunday afternoon, the 11th August 2019. The repairs will hopefully be completed by the Wednesday morning. Stephen's bunker rebuilds have been very professionally done and we are excited to see the next development.

Please note that certain cart paths have moved to avoid golfers driving the carts too near to the greens. It is impossible to control all golfers, but this will hopefully prevent most from destroying valuable playing areas.

Bunker raking has been a contentious issue and we are trying to make sure bunkers are kept to the correct standard as has been set out in our blueprint. We have recently noted sand creeping higher up the walls and requested staff to take note of this and correct where necessary. There will still be a certain height of sand on the sides in certain bunkers, but much reduced than what it is now. We are also actively rotavating certain bunkers to help soften the base. This should help prevent the dreaded "gum" shot.

All in all, the course is in superb condition with greens healthy and rolling true.

Well done to Stephen and his team on producing an exceptional course.

PRO-SHOP REPORT

Today I would like to discuss the slow-play issue as it is an issue we are faced with on an everyday basis.

The misperception with slow play is that players think that their fourball should be keeping up with the fourball behind them, when in actual fact, you need to ensure you are keeping up with the fourball ahead of you.

This is one of the R&A’s focus areas to speed up play in golf. Hopefully, the players start interpreting these changes correctly to ensure that everyone playing their next round has a very enjoyable game.

;

A couple of things that you, as a golfer, can do to speed up play include:

  1. Play ready golf.
  2. Try not to disturb the other players, but when you are at your ball, instead of having to wait the extra minute, play your shot ahead.
  3. Make sure to play the provisional ball if you are unsure about the safety of your shot.
  4. Stick to the 3 minute rule of searching for your ball.
  5. Aim to hit your shot within 20 seconds.
  6. Take your practice shots and determine which club to hit while waiting for other players.
  7. Lastly also try to plan your shot ahead.

If we can all apply these few key points in our game, I can assure you, that every round will become more enjoyable for everyone.
